That field again

Not there yet but further on than two weeks ago.

Green Brighton

Looking south-west from the Roman Camp, Brighton seems to be more trees than houses.

(And this photo wasn't taken today!)

Waterhall

Waterhall is a valley which has been partly filled to make a level surface for playing fields - mainly football pitches, but also good for this individual sport whatever it might be called. That guy is standing on a large skateboard and being pulled along by the kite.

That field

We promised to keep an eye on this field. The flowers have come out a bit more and it should look great in a week or so - while I am in kennels!

Talking of Amex

Yesterday we saw the new Amex Stadium (again). American Express is one of the biggest employers in Brighton and they are set to become bigger with the extension of their European HQ. The cranes on the site can be seen in the distance from the Roman Camp.

View to the east

It has been a while since we posted a panoramic view so here is what we see looking east from 39 Acres. In the far left of the picture is the new Amex Community Stadium (presumably sponsored by American Express) where Brighton & Hove Albion will be playing next season. To the right of that are some of the buildings of the University of Brighton with, below them, a gym and the buildings of the Aldridge Academy, previously Falmer High School and before that, Westlain Secondary School. The hill on the left behind the Amex Stadium is Mount Caburn, which is the far side of Lewes.

Obsolete

The triangulation point on the western rampart of the Roman camp will have been rendered obsolete by satellite mapping techniques.

Family fun

Every May, Moulsecoomb Family Fun Day is held in the Wild Park. Yesterday was the day.

Over the hills and far away

It's surprising how often the weather on the far side of the Downs seems different to ours. This photo was taken a couple of days ago when we had a bright blue sky but there was 10/10 cloud cover beyond the Downs.

The old yew tree

From the Boss: This tree stands at the junction of four tracks in Stanmer Woods and acts as a sort of landmark. It must be getting old now and it certainly seems to have lost a bit of weight over the years I have been walking dogs round here.

In the pink

A clump of red campion just by the car park off Coldean Lane.

A watching brief

Not too sure just what it is growing in this field near Old Boat Corner but the Boss and I will keep our eyes on it. It looks as though it could end up a sea of pink flowers.

Ne'er cast a clout

Given the time of year it's hardly surprising that the hawthorn trees (may) are smothered in blossom.

Overhead

Goblin Coombe is a peaceful spot - or rather, it would be if it wasn't right underneath the flight path of Bristol airport.

But the sheep don't seem to be bothered.

From the Boss: I've found a few more pictures from the farm so we will leave Stanmer for a while. This is Goblin Coombe, a couple of miles from the farm, where mu cousin-in-law winters some of his Hebridean sheep.

From the other side

From High Park Wood we see that field of rape from the other side. Just a chink of the English Channel in the distance and the buildings to the left are the Whitehawk television transmitter and the grandstand at Brighton racecourse.

Home again

We got back to Sussex to find our bluebells definitely past their best but the oil seed rape is starting to turn a brilliant yellow and this field at least is lush and green.

The last of the pictures from the farm. Tomorrow we will be back in Stanmer - or thereabouts.

From the Park Fields we get a glimpse of Brockley Hall, home to a roost of the rare greater horseshoe bat.

A floral meadow

The spring in this corner of the field was dry last weekend but maybe the water level had encouraged all the wild flowers - bluebells, dandelions, buttercups and cowslips galore.
